Kerala is one state in India that has always talked a distinction for itself in a lot of aspects including food, dance, culture and even politics. This makes Kerala one of the most special states in India. Their Legacy with respect to Sporting is unparalleled. The Sporting history of Kerala can be traced to the military acumen of the local rulers who even defeated the mightiest Navy of the world. It is probably this tradition that has resulted in the building some of the best quotes. One of these words that the Kerala people have built is the Snake boat which is a very long-dated version of a normal boat that has multitudes of paddlers who number 864 or 128. These boats always have had a military application. However, in the recent days after the significance of the local military has declined and when the Indian Navy has taken over Cochin and Ezhimala, this amazing Snake boat has started to have a leisure time fun application. And thus was born the boat race of Kerala.

The boat race of Kerala is endearingly known as the vallamkali which literally translates to boat game. There are a lot of boat races that happened all over Kerala but most of them happen near the backwaters surrounding Alappuzha, Kayamkulam and the surroundings. The punnamada lake and the Vembanad lake are some of the most famous centers of Snake boat racing.

These boots are about 30 to 35 m in length and this, like many other racing events, is a test of speed. The boat that finishes first is named as the winner. The winning of these trophies is considered such a big pride in Kerala that each team spends about 600000 rupees just for winning in these boat races.

What makes boat races even more significant and interesting is that there are cultural aspects of this particular boat race. There is a special kind of music called the vanchi patu which literally means Boat song which is a form of poetry in Malayalam language and is predominantly used during these boat races. There are poets who are exclusively known for this kind of songs and Ramamurthy Warrier is considered a pioneer of Vanchipaatu.

Perhaps the biggest snake boat racing event for probably the biggest Sporting event in the entire world is the Nehru Trophy boat race. This takes place at the punnamada lake in Alappuzha district of Kerala. There are more than 20 teams that participate in this trophy and some of the teams have had a Legacy of being in the competition ever since 1954 and this was just 2 years after the competition started in the year 1952. This is a delight for tourists from all over the world to capture such a different yet significant aspect of the Unique culture of Kerala. And the interesting thing to note about this event is that it also showcases the religious harmony of Kerala. There is a Parthasarathy Chundan as much as there is a Gabriel chundan – Chundan means Snake boat in Malayalam.

In addition to the Nehru Trophy, there are a lot of other events like the Tirupurayar boat race, the President’s Trophy boat race, the Kallada boat race the Kumarakom boat race and the champakulam moolam boat race that happened all over the backwater regions of Kerala.

The boat races of Kerala applied to the state and the nation and it is a thing of Awesomeness that this state holds a record and a Legacy that has been untouched and undisturbed for more than 650 years. We are very sure that this Legacy will live on forever and as a citizen of India and as a person who loves to see the world, the boat races of Kerala are not to be missed in a Kerala tour package of South India tour package!
